This is a style guide for the Pac-Man video game franchise created by Namco America and Namco Hometek; American divisions of Namco. This style guide was given out exclusively to licensors and was not released to the public.
It was used from 1992 until sometime around the late 1990s. It was replaced by “Guidelines for the Reproduction of the PAC-MAN Character”, a revised Pac-Man style guide from Namco's Japanese team featuring the new (unified) Japanese art style with artwork by Hideki Tanaami; issued in 1999, though the new artwork would begin to appear as early as 1996. The last notable Pac-Man production to use the designs is Pac-Man Ghost Zone, though some of the facial features from this manual (specifically for Pinky) would continue to be used for a few years past the replacement of this manual.
The style guide prominently features artwork with the Americanized logos and character designs of the Pac-Man cast. The artwork featured in the style guide is mostly based on the American artwork created by Greg Martin for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy releases of Pac-Man games. It contains artwork for Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Baby, and the Ghosts: Clyde (Blinky), Pinky, Inky and Blinky (Clyde). Like many Pac-Man media from the 1990s, this style guide features the error where Ghosts Blinky and Clyde have their names swapped.
The scans are sourced from the Bandai Namco Entertainment of America vs. AtGames lawsuit document from 2019, in which a complete scan of the style guide was provided as exhibit 4.
Pac-Man is property of Bandai Namco Entertainment.
